Caltech and Pasadena

The California Institute of Technology is located at 1200 East California Boulevard, Pasadena, California, 91125.

The Caltech campus is bounded by Wilson and Hill Avenues west and east, and by Del Mar Avenue and California Boulevard north and south. It is a small campus, only one city block square. The Pasadena Convention and Visitors Bureau provides a great deal of information about the Pasadena area, attractions, dining and transportation.

The high-energy physics department is located in the Lauritsen building, right on California avenue. Several maps are scattered throughout the campus.

Getting to Pasadena

The Greater Los Angeles area includes five major airports: Los Angeles International, Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena, Long Beach, Ontario, and Orange County John Wayne International airports. Most visitors should arrive at the Los Angeles International (LAX).

Several options are available to reach Pasadena:

If you do not wish to rent a car, the most convenient way to reach Pasadena is either by taxi or shared ride van (the second option being cheaper but usually longer). Public transportation is the cheapest alternative, but is likely to be much more complicated and much longer (see here for planning a trip.)

The ground transportation options of each airport are accessible at these links: LAX , Burbank , Ontario , Long beach , Orange County John Wayne

Driving to Caltech

We recommend you check the road and freeways conditions once you arrive, Los Angeles is well-known for its heavytraffic during rush hour. The usual directions to reach Caltech are given below, but it is worth checking if another faster option is available at time:

From the west (LAX), take the 105 east freeway and then the 110 North to where it ends, continue north on Arroyo Parkway and turn right on California Blvd. Continue straight until you reach Caltech, shortly after crossing Lake Avenue.
From the south (Long Beach or John Wayne Airports), head to the 110 North and follow it until the end, continue north on Arroyo Parkway and turn right on California Blvd. Continue straight until you reach Caltech, shortly after crossing Lake Avenue.
From the north (Burbank Airport), take the 5 south freeway, then the 130 east and exit at Lake Avenue, then go south on Lake to Del Mar Avenue, and turn left.
From the east (Ontario Airport), take the 10 west freeway, then the 57 north and the 210 east (Los Angelinos are fond of their freeway system), and exit at Lake Avenue, then go south on Lake to Del Mar Avenue, and turn left.

Once in Pasadena, there are signs to direct you to the Caltech campus, located in the southwestern part of the city.

Parking at Caltech

Caltech is a small campus, only one city block in area, with limited street parking located all around the perimeter. Curbside parking is limited to 1 or 2 hours, and Pasadena parking enforcement regularly patrols the streets, ticketing or towing away violators. We strongly recommend that you use a campus parking. Campus visitors may park in any commuter (unreserved) stall on campus with a daily or weekly permit. The list of campus parking and parking fees is available here. Please contact us if you wish to make parking arrangements in advance.
